Alex Gross` last project, Gas Station 2 was realizedwhile a two-month residency in Glasgow. The ideadeveloped through drawings was to build anarchitectural structure and have it gliding throughthe space. The exhibition space, a hall build forpainting trains now used as a museum for contemporaryart is explored by throwing the sculpture from anelectric station lift.In the exhibited drawings the architecture is crashingagainst walls and columns while it is repeatedlythrown into the space. The actual performance reveals some humorous aspectsin the fumbles that come along with the approach tobring the logic of drawings into reality. Instead offlying the gas station slides into the space in themost banal way.As in earlier projects there is a moment of chance andfailure in the set up. In a playful way thearchitectural structure is challenged by weirdcircumstances. In Gas station 1 the architecture seemsto float in the branches of some birch trees. Theinstability of the organic readymade (tree) stands incontrast to the promise of durability inherent in theindustrial materials. The trees seem to be too fragileto carry the weight. The structure rocks back andforce with every wind blow. A subtle feeling ofdisaster is omnipresent while the gentle movement ofthe object more evokes humorous aspects.
