Raquel Mendes, 1978, Portugal

Raquel Mendes graduated in Sculpture in the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon (Portugal) in the year 2002. During that time she was an Erasmus student in Oslo Academy of Art (Norway). And in 2007 she has finished her Master in Fine Arts in the Glasgow School of Art (Scotland).
Her practice involves sculpture, installation art and lately photography and video.
Since the year 2000 that she exhibits regularly and she has been represented by the Sopro gallery in Lisbon since 2003.

Raquel Mendes consider people behavior as a controlled space of action and the emotions as an uncontrolled space of action. The management of the lack between both ways and the ongoing negotiations of relations between what should be and what it is are the main starting points of the work. The space of conflict/confrontation when having to assume what one is, feel or think, when goes against oneself or the others. Therefore, the ability of dealing with situations that are not expected and explore a person’s flexibility with life is her main source of interest.

“Generosa” (September 30, Galleri BOX)

The project started with my grandmother’s end. The work was based in the observation and record (photo / video) of situations and behaviors, which uncovered the signs of physical and psychological deterioration.
The coexistence with unusual situations arising from the attempt of interaction and understanding with someone whose language and presence are impracticable due to illness and the failure of sense due to an inability of consciousness of itself and its history opened space for an unusual construction of a new way of being.
To be confronted with all this signs of decomposition, giving magnificence of the relationship with time and with space makes us more aware and uncomfortably vulnerable.
To maintain the clarity of someone who attends to an end there was a need for the cold eye of the camera to filter this process of loss, a need of an aesthetic light that dehumanizes the action and therefore makes it bearable and, without doubt, significant.

"... if on the one hand the emotional dimension is immediately an intellectual operation, on the other hand the intellectual dimension is first an emotional reception. Thinking is to receive what comes from outside, host, to host what presents itself as strange and enigmatical. Making-itself-felt is to offer ourselves, for something to find in us a chance to be in the world: thus we assume ourselves as conditions of the demonstration of what is exterior, impersonal, supra-individual. It is not we, as subjects who feel something, but the contrary we offer us to a feeling that is displace to another place. The experience of making-itself-felt amounts to a give oneself up to, to allow oneself up to, so that through us the other, the different, will become reality, event, history.”
"(Mario Perniola, "Do sentir")
